How To Replace the Tail Light on a 2006-2011 Toyota Camry

If you notice your 2006 to 2011 Camry’s tail light bulbs are burned out, getting dim or failing, it’s important to change both bulbs as soon as possible to keep you safe on the road. Changing both tail light bulbs is recommended even if it seems like you only need to change one, since both bulbs grow weaker at a similar rate are are likely to fail at around the same time. This procedure was completed on a 2006 Toyota Camry, but will be similar on Camry models from 2006 to 2011.

These step-by-step instructions and video show how to replace the tail light bulbs on 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 Toyota Camry models. If you’re not completely comfortable doing this yourself, we’d be happy to recommend a professional technician in your area.

Step 1: Locate the Bulb to be Changed

Step 1: Locate the Bulb to be Changed

Open the trunk. Locate the hinged panel behind the tail light assembly and open it. The top bulb is your tail light bulb, and the bottom bulb is the turn signal bulb.
Step 2: Remove the Old Bulb

Step 2: Remove the Old Bulb

Turn the socket of the tail light bulb counterclockwise to remove it from the back of the assembly. Remove the tail light bulb itself by pulling it directly out of the socket.
Step 3: Install the New Bulb

Step 3: Install the New Bulb

Press your new bulb into the socket until it is fully seated, and make sure you’re wearing gloves—finger oils can cause hot spots on the glass that can cause the bulb to burn out prematurely. Secure the bulb and socket in the back of the assembly by turning it clockwise so that it locks into place.
Step 4: Test the New Light

Step 4: Test the New Light

Turn on your lights to make sure the new bulb is working. If it works, close the panel on that side and turn off the lights.
Step 5: Repeat the Steps on the Other Side

Step 5: Repeat the Steps on the Other Side

Tail light bulbs should always be changed in pairs, since they’re likely the same age and have been used for the same amount of time, so repeat these steps on the other side. Once both bulbs are changed and tested, close the trunk.
