Step-By-Step Instructions to Change the Oil in Your Accord

Your Honda Accord’s oil filter traps contaminants in motor oil before it’s circulated throughout your car’s engine. Performing oil changes on your 2003-2007 Honda Accord, as well as replacing the oil filter, is a routine car maintenance task that can extend your vehicle’s engine life and improve overall performance. Contaminated, dirty oil or a clogged oil filter may cause metallic or ticking sounds coming from the engine, decreased engine performance, or if not addressed, severe engine damage or seizing. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend oil change intervals of between 3,000 to 5,000 miles, but your Accord’s owners manual will provide the manufacturer’s recommended interval. Our instructions and step-by-step video can help you perform an oil and oil filter change on your 2003-2007 Honda Accord to maintain routine car maintenance and keep your vehicle running its best.

Step 3: Remove the Oil Drain Plug

Step 4: Remove the Old Oil Filter

Remove the filter the rest of the way by hand and let any oil left in the filter run out into your drain pan. Make sure the old filter gasket came off the block with the filter. Once all the oil has drained, use a shop towel or rag to clean the filter mounting area, drain plug, and drain port.

Step 5: Install A New Crush Washer

Install a new crush washer on your drain plug, and thread it into the port by hand. Use a torque wrench and 17mm socket to tighten the drain plug to 33 foot-pounds.
In two images, our expert lubricates the o-ring for the new oil filter and installs into the vehicle.

Step 6: Install Your New Oil Filter

Use some fresh engine oil to lubricate the O-ring on your new oil filter. Spin the filter on by hand until the seal lightly seats against the block. Once it’s lightly seated, give the filter three-quarters of a turn to secure it.
Our expert pours fresh oil into the Honda’s engine bay and tightens the oil plug.

Step 7: Add Fresh Motor Oil

With the drain plug and filter secure, return to the engine bay. Add 4.4 quarts of 5W-20 motor oil. Once the oil is refilled, replace the oil fill cap.
Our expert removes the oil drain pan and removed the jack stands.

Remove the drain pan from underneath the car. Remove the jack stands, lower the front end and remove the wheel chocks.
Our expert checks the fluid levels to make sure the oil level is in a safe range.

Step 8: Check Your Fluids

Find the oil dipstick, remove it and use a shop towel or rag to wipe it off. Insert the dipstick again, and check it to make sure the oil level is within the safe operating range indicated on the dipstick.
With the hood still propped, our expert starts the vehicle to warm it up and checks underneath the vehicle for leaks. Then, they check the oil levels again.

Step 9: Start Your Vehicle

Before closing the hood, start the car and let it run until it’s warm. Check under the front end for any leaks. Turn the engine off and use the dipstick to check the oil level once more. If everything looks good, close the hood.
Our expert presses the odometer knob to reset the oil percentage reading.

Step 10: Turn Off Your Maintenance Light

To reset the oil percentage reading and turn off the maintenance light, turn your key to the ON position. Press the Select/Reset or Trip Odometer knob repeatedly until the oil life percentage is displayed.
After following the previous steps, the oil life percentage has reset to 100%.

Press and hold the knob for about ten seconds until the display starts to blink. Take your finger off the knob, then press and hold it again for about five seconds. The maintenance light should go out, and oil life should reset to 100%.
