How to Clean & Replace MAF Sensor

The MAF or mass airflow sensor measures the amount of air flowing into your engine and helps the computer to determine how much fuel to inject into the combustion chamber. When this sensor isn't working properly you could experience rough idling, engine hiccups, or stalling. Watch as we show you how to clean or replace your MAF Sensor.

Replacing an Old MAF Sensor

Step 1: Locate the Sensor to Be Replaced

Start by locating your MAF sensor. On our vehicle it’s between the air filter box and the intake hose.

There’s an electrical connection that plugs in at the side. Remove the plug.

Remove the air filter box

Next, loosen the clamps or bolts on the air filter box, then lift it up.

Do It Right: Now is a good time to change your air filter if it’s looking dirty.

Step 2: Remove the Old Sensor and Install a New One

In our case, we’ll use the key included with our new MAF sensor to slide into the slot on the air box to release the old sensor and slide it out. If your new sensor did not come with a key, then you should be able to remove the old sensor without any tools. There may be clips or clamps holding the sensor in place.

Cleaning a MAF Sensor

If you’re cleaning your existing MAF sensor, take the component away from the engine into a well-ventilated area. A small amount of buildup can give your engine faulty readings, so don’t be afraid to use plenty of cleaner. You may even want to spray it down several times. Follow the directions on your cleaner to allow for sufficient drying time before reinstalling. It’s possible that cleaning the sensor won’t be enough to get it working again, and it will need to be replaced.

Do It Right: Only use MAF sensor cleaner. Other cleaning fluids can cause damage and leave unwanted residue. Use the cleaner to spray the interior thoroughly to remove any dirt that may have accumulated.
