Preparing to Check Your Battery
- Always refer to your vehicle’s manual first to learn specifics on battery maintenance
- Remove all jewelry before handling your battery
- Wear gloves, long sleeves and protective eye wear
- Locate the battery (Batteries in newer vehicles are not always under the hood; some are located in the trunk, recessed cargo spaces or other out-of-the-way spots)
What to Check & Look For on Your Battery
- Look carefully for bulges, cracks or leaks
- Use a terminal post cleaning brush and cleaning spray to remove any rust or lead oxidation near the connectors (battery fluid can evaporate more quickly in the summer and cause corrosion)
- Check the tightness of the battery cable ends attached to the terminals (if you can move them at all, they need to be tightened)
- Make sure the battery is fastened securely to the battery tray (a loose battery can be very dangerous)
Caution: Due to how different vehicles work, the computer system of your vehicle may need to be reset after the battery has been replaced. This will ensure that your vehicle runs as it should and that you're not left stranded.
