How to Replace a Tail Light Assembly in a 2009 to 2015 Toyota Tacoma

Your Toyota Tacoma’s tail lights are essential for letting other drivers see that you're in front of them, especially in low-light or poor weather conditions. Some tail light bulbs even incorporate additional filaments to activate your brake lights or turn signals, signaling your actions on the road. For 2005 to 2015 Toyota Tacoma models, it’s good practice to replace both tail light bulbs simultaneously, as they wear out at a similar rate. Tail light assemblies can be damaged in a collision, or may suffer wear and deterioration due to sun exposure, and should be replaced if they no longer protect the bulbs or become difficult for light to pass through. It is important to inspect and maintain your Tacoma’s lighting system to avoid potential safety risks. Follow these step-by-step instructions to change the tail light assembly on your 2005-2015 Tacoma to help keep your vehicle visible and safe.

Our expert uses a ratchet and socket to loosen and remove the bolts on the Tacoma

Step 1: Remove the Bolts Securing the Tail Light Assembly

Lower the Tailgate. You'll see two bolts securing the assembly. One at the top and one at the bottom. Use your ratchet and 10mm socket to loosen and remove the bolts.

Step 2: Disconnect Your Tail Light Assembly

To remove the assembly, pull directly outward on it toward the rear of the truck. You can use a trim tool if needed to create separation and disengage the body alignment clips. Just be careful not to damage your paint. With the assembly detached, you'll see a wiring harness connecting it to the truck. Press in on the tab to disengage the plug and disconnect the wires.

Position your new tail light assembly close enough to connect the wiring harness. Push the two ends together until you hear the tab click into place. Align the tabs on the tail light assembly with their openings on the truck body and push the assembly directly inward toward the front of the truck until it's seated.
