An overview of wiper blades

One in five collisions is caused by drivers who simply can't see out their windshield. When it comes to vehicle safety, nothing is more important than having good visibility of the road ahead. During a downpour, you could be a danger not only to yourself but to your passengers and other vehicles on the road if your wiper blades are not effective.

It's recommended that you replace your wiper blades every six to twelve months, or sooner if you notice a difference in visibility. You'll find there are many types of blades to choose from including conventional, beam and hybrid.

Change your blades today if they are: skipping, streaking, splitting or squeaking.

Conventional Wiper Blades VS. Beam and Hybrid Wiper Blades

Conventional Wiper Blade

Conventional Blades

  • Also known as "frame-style", these were the most common type of blades used on vehicles until recent years
  • Incorporate a metal framework that serves as a mount for the actual wiper, a metal-backed strip of either ordinary rubber or halogen-hardened rubber
  • Typically heavier than other styles of blades
Beam Wiper Blade

Beam Blades

  • "Bracketless" with an infinite number of pressure points, allowing them to hug curved windshields for maximum windshield contact and durability
  • Significantly lighter than conventional wiper blades, providing quieter operation
  • Aerodynamic with less wind lift
Hybrid Wiper Blade

Hybrid Blades

  • Crossover in blade technology that offers the superior wiping of a beam blade with the added protection and styling of a hinged shell encasing the wiper

Beam and hybrid wiper blades are better equipped for all-season performance. Though they are more expensive than conventional blades, they provide a much longer blade life and overall better performance. Upgrading from conventional is now possible on most makes and models of vehicles.
