Check Your Battery

Don’t Let Your Battery Leave You Out in the Cold!

As temperatures drop below freezing, your vehicle’s battery power can be reduced by up to 50%. A battery that’s already been weakened by extreme summer temperatures will often fail in the winter months. Here are a few preventive maintenance suggestions that can prolong the life of your battery – and may keep you from being stranded with a bad battery.

Test the Charge—Stop by your local O’Reilly Auto Parts store to have your vehicle’s battery, starting, and charging systems tested. We can help make sure things are working properly.

Keep it Clean—Batteries can become corroded over time. Corrosion can affect the amount of power the engine draws from the battery. You can easily clean corrosion with a terminal cleaner and terminal brush. Disconnect the cables and clean the terminals and the connectors. Reattach and coat both the connectors and terminals with protective spray to prevent future corrosion.

Inspect the Cables—While you’re cleaning things off, check the cables and connectors for cracks, corrosion and breaks that might interrupt the power flow. Replace damaged cables as needed. Also make sure they are connected properly.

Keep it Charged—A fully charged battery can withstand temperatures as low as -76°F, but a battery with a low charge can freeze at a mere 32°F. If your vehicle is going to sit for long periods of time in extreme temperatures, consider keeping your battery connected to a battery maintainer or trickle charger

Get the Right One—If the temps drop below freezing regularly, you might consider installing a battery that is designed to withstand extreme cold temperatures. This will ensure that you have enough cranking amps needed to start the engine during the cold winter months.

As always, check your owner’s manual for the specific needs of your vehicle. Then visit your local O’Reilly Auto Parts and let our Professional Parts People help make sure your vehicle is ready for the cold weather. We’d be happy to test your battery free of charge.
