The Top 10 Cheapest to Insure 2012 Model Year Trucks and SUVs list has recently been released by Motor Trend, reminding car owners of the various costs associated with owning a vehicle that go beyond the base price offered at new car dealers. The vehicles on the list span all segments from midsize trucks to luxury crossovers.

Using CoverHound data, Motor Trend says the cheapest car to insure is the Honda Pilot Touring for $108.33 a month on average. The car is so cheap because it was named an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick and received "good" safety ratings across the board. The Pilot Touring also received at least four out of five stars by the IIHS for its front, side, rollover and overall ranking metrics.

The Dodge Durango followed with an average of $112.74 to insure per month. Surprisingly placed toward the top of the list, considering the power of the large SUV, the Durango, like the Honda Pilot Touring, received high safety marks from the IIHS and also from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It also appeals to insurance companies because the parts to replace the Durango are inexpensive.

The Durango was followed by the Mitsubishi Outlander SE for $113.07 per month. The car undoubtedly appears on the list because it has never received a safety recall from the NHTSA. In addition, the vehicle also received a four-star safety rating from the administration.

Next in line is the Nissan Frontier LE for $115.44 per month. It is the first truck on the list, but for good reason, with its agility helping it avoid danger on the road. Not to mention, like all the cars above, the Frontier LE received high marks in safety.

The GMC Canyon came in fifth on Motor Trends' list, costing an average of $115.86 to insure each month. It appeals to insurers because of its compact size, lending to commuter usage, rather than cargo work usage that could damage it. The truck also features interchangeable parts with other vehicles making it less expensive to repair.

The list continues with the Honda Pilot EX, Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado 1500 LTZ, Acura MDX and Lincoln MKT, respectively.

Along with insurance costs, service and repairs are also often overlooked when purchasing and owning a vehicle. Car owners are encouraged to practice preventative maintenance, particularly to the car's engine and brakes to ensure costs stay down.
